Idea Blog (12-09-09): Free Writing

"Conceptual art is an idea expressed without concern of materials or aesthetics." (Source)

A friend recently told me that "you need to choose a concept, not an aesthetic like vintage." My concept (or idea) is that sometimes, art is more emotionally responsive and touches a different group of people experiencing the piece if it is aesthetically pleasing with a basic simple story within. Therefore, aesthetic itself is a concept that I think is important enough to be explored and studied.

Conceptual art can be anything. Literally, anything (I welcome someone to discuss this with me further, I would really like to hear other opinions on that subject). You just have to have a reason to explain it. I can do that, no problem. In the past, I've always focused on concepts that I wasn't expressing just functions the earth is responsible for. It was my job as the artist, to draw attention to these processes (ie growth, substance, material). But then I am not attracted to my work and why would I want to make work I find unattractive and quite honestly, wouldn't want anyone to see? The crowd that I am trying to impress would not care about anything I've produced so far (how could I blame them?). I shouldn't be a machine making art. I miss being in love with what I'm doing. I'm not having a crisis. I know I still love photography. I just know that I also need to be spending a lot of my energy on doing something I care about while also finding a job because I do not plan on showing in galleries as a means of survival (never have even considered that).

The industry I am hoping to be a part of, will involve art production and buying (for magazines, hopefully). Therefore, I will work to attach art & content, linking them 'conceptually.' I get this. In fact, I think its pretty ridiculous when the art mirrors the story so much it insults the reader. I think they can understand how the art relates after reading the content without a literal representation. However, the art is what draws the reader in. One of my recent favorite artists is illustrator, Christopher Neal. I would hire this guy for every issue because to me, he gets what I have always defined as concept and gets that the aesthetic is important.

Thats enough for tonight, I need to go to bed!

Here are some of Christopher Neal's pieces!
